A Scary Moment That Reminded Me What Really Matters in Love

Life has a way of surprising us with moments that force us to pause and reflect. Recently, my husband, Will, had a health scare that did just that. It started with stomach pain, and we thought, "No big deal, maybe something he ate." But things escalated—he got a fever, and then came the chest pain. 😳 At that point, I knew we had to go to the hospital, but Will—being the stubborn man I love—wasn’t too keen on the idea.

Here’s the thing: Will is amazing in so many ways. He checks all the boxes I had on my list when I was dating intentionally. But his stubbornness? That’s one trait I’ve had to navigate, though it was never a dealbreaker. Still, in moments like these, it’s clear how important it is to choose your battles. This time, I was firm, and thankfully, his Happy Wife, Happy Life philosophy worked in my favor. 😅

But then, something happened that gave me an unexpected lesson in relationships. As Will sat on the edge of the bed trying to breathe through the pain, he said softly, “Get me close.” I immediately moved to comfort him, thinking he needed me right by his side. But then, I realized what he actually said was, “Get me clothes!” 😂 The situation turned from tense to comical in seconds, and we both ended up laughing—despite his pain.

What does this teach us about love?

It’s easy to get caught up in the challenges and forget to cherish the small moments of joy. If you can laugh together—even during tough times—it’s a sign of a strong, healthy relationship.

But when we arrived at the hospital, the seriousness hit me. Watching Will get examined, I couldn’t help but imagine what life would be like without him. I realized how much I take for granted—the everyday moments, the companionship, the partnership. We can get so caught up in the routine that we forget to appreciate the people we love.

If there’s one thing I hope you take from this story, it’s this: don’t wait for a scare to remind you of what really matters in your relationship. We never know how much time we have with our loved ones, so let’s not wait for a hospital visit to express how we feel. Tell your partner today how much you appreciate them. Hold their hand a little tighter. Laugh more. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Life is too short for unnecessary arguments or holding grudges.

Lastly, if you’re still looking for your person, don’t settle for less than someone who brings you joy, stability, and a sense of partnership. Your soulmate isn’t just someone you’re attracted to—they’re your best friend, the person who can make you laugh even in the scariest moments. And trust me, they’re out there, waiting for you. ❤️

Keep going, and remember, the right person will be worth every moment of waiting.
